Bog excursion
The northern pre-Alps have vast areas of swamps, remnants from the melting glaciers after the last ice age. After draining 95% of these wetlands and peat bogs to create more arable land and pastures over the past 200-300 years, most of the remaining areas are protected now, with a rich, but fragile flora & fauna.
The frog in the third picture was in a group of five, all chilling in a small mud hole bearing the hot day (many of the smaller mud holes nearby were already dried out)... Rising temperatures and hotter summers are a major thread to these unique habitats and their biodiversity...
(The light and scenery in the first two pictures instantly reminded me of some paintings by Ivan Shishkin, one of my favorite landscape painters.)
