Gorky And His Contemporaries Memoirs And Letters

The reminiscences of Gorky presented in this book will bring the reader echoes of that great life. In these reminiscences Gorky appears as the herald of socialist art and the author of its classic literature, and also as a man actively involved in literary life—a fellow artist for some, an example and mentor for others, an unforgettable partner in conversation for still others.

Translated from the Russian by Cynthia Carlile

I started Simon Callow's epic (and ongoing!) multivolume biography of Orson Welles. And this is amazing so far. Callow is as obsessive about Welles as Simon Reynolds was about Hemingway or Norman Sherry was about Graham Greene or Max Saunders was about Ford Madox Ford (the last one completely unearned in my view, but you'll have to wait for my PARADE'S END essay). The hardcore biographer who must know everything!

I am home taking care of family members with COVID and I am bored AF. And I was thinking this might be a good time to work on the thing (book?) I am writing about my Dad's life but I am having so much trouble with motivation for the writing part (as opposed to the researching and thinking about it part). And I was wondering about using this account as a way to sort of micr-blog my writing. I feel so much more motivation when I've got an audience, it doesn't matter how small the audience. Has anyone tried this as a tool for writing motivation and want to tell me how it went/ is going?

Pulling Harvey Out of Her Hat by Mimi Pockross chronicles the story of how Mary Chase―a housewife with three children from a working-class Irish community in Denver, Colorado―became a Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright for Harvey, a Broadway comedy about a gentle soul and his invisible six-foot-and-one-half-inch-tall rabbit friend.
