FreeBSD 15 + CDE is probably the closest you can get to sitting in front of a high-end UNIX workstation without owning a time machine.

Running Common Desktop Environment in 2026 feels strangely refreshing. No blur effects, no Electron, no notifications fighting for attention, No ai written code, just Motif, terminals, man pages, and a desktop paradigm that was already mature before I was born.

Current setup: • FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE • CDE • dtwm • bhyve • Motif everywhere

Today’s activity: reading bhyve(4) manuals and pretending I'm a UNIX admin in 1996.

I got convinced and setting up a standalone server with Freebsd 15.1 as virtual instance server
Besides the ones I have.

Install was a bit chunky because I needed wifi for that moment but the ax201 is well supported once the hotspot was online

This one gets Sylve a jail and bhyve management environment.
Migrating as much as possible from Proxmox, at least thats the plan

@grahamperrin @DianeBruce Mine are #bhyve hypervisors or bastille jail hosts so nothing custom at all. CPU microcode worked as well (usual issue).

I can see that there would be problems if you have DRM that needs to be dealt with (this really should exist in base to keep in sync, not ports) #FreeBSD

My talk about #PegaProx for #Proxmox VE based clusters at the @[email protected] conference has been accepted!

I'm happy to share some more insights about the project, development stages, integration of the ProxTools collection (like #ProxLB, #ProxPatch, #ProxSnap,...) and more! We'll end up in a live demo of PegaProx, orchestrating several Proxmox clusters, XCP-ng based ones and maybe I'll have already finished another great thing until that date 🙂

Has anyone succeeded in running #DragonFlyBSD under #bhyve with UEFI on #freebsd ?
I'm using /usr/share/examples/bhyve/vmrun.sh -c 2 -m 4096M -t tap0 -d /dev/zvol/zroot/vms/dragonfly -E -i -I DragonFly-x86_64-20260528-DEV-v6.5.0-1667-g59b78e44f9.iso dragonfly but it's failing right after I choose my option in the loader.
