The war in Gaza is changing weapons, from bombs to checkpoints.
In Gaza, the war continues as an administrative practice. Bombardments have given way to a new rhythm: that of checkpoints opening and closing and trucks passing or waiting. In recent hours, the World Food Programme has spoken of a gradual reactivation of the Kerem Shalom crossing for direct aid to the Strip. Gradual is the word that best describes the situation: survival depends on logistical decisions made outside Gaza, on authorizations that arrive or remain suspended, on corridors that exist only on paper until someone makes them viable.
While the Strip remains suspended in this fragile balance, a clash is unfolding in Israel over police control. Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara has asked the Supreme Court to consider the removal of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, accusing him of interfering with the independence of law enforcement. Ben-Gvir retaliated by accusing her of wanting to turn the police into a “Revolutionary Guard on the Iranian model.” The language is that of a total war: anyone trying to enforce rules is portrayed as an internal enemy.
The conflict arrives at the height of the regional war and reveals a deep fracture in the Israeli state. On one side, the government claims political control of security forces and demands obedience. On the other, the State Legal Advisor speaks of pressure on the chain of command and operational interference. It is a struggle for command that takes place far from the front lines, but that also determines how squares, protests, convoys, and public order will be managed.
Meanwhile, Gaza continues to live within a permanent suspension. Courts discuss powers and competencies, ministers trade accusations. In the Strip, the war is measured by another unit: the number of trucks that manage to pass through each day through the checkpoint, and the time it takes to transform a “gradual” promise into bread.
