This seems a bit alarmist, given that the ‘leaked memo’ is simply a letter written to the Health Minister, on behalf of a particular group; in itself it doesn’t signal an acceptance of their proposal by the government—I’m also wary of it because of the date of publication (Apr 1), although it doesn’t seem like the kind of thing that makes for a good prank.

However, we do need to remain vigilant of attempts by faith-based healthcare providers insinuating themselves into our public healthcare as this is already happening in Alberta.

Allowing faith-based healthcare providers into our public system opens the door to the denial of certain services or procedures on ‘moral’ grounds. This is unacceptable and contrary to the central premise of ‘universal’ healthcare.

It feels like this should have gotten more attention: Conservative MPs posing with Bibles in the House of Commons.

Copied from an email:

Last Wednesday, MPs voted for Bill C-9 to pass third reading.

We are still concerned about the bill's effects on freedom of expression and the right to protest. It creates bubble zones for churches that privilege religious institutions, regardless of what events are held in a place of worship.

However, the good news is that the bill has been amended to end the religious defence for hate speech. This is something we have long advocated for and is a big win for secular advocates.

Thank you for helping us get here.

Not everyone is happy to see the religious hate speech exemption end, though. Several Conservative MPs opted to vote against the bill with a Bible in hand, trying to argue the bill will criminalize the holy book (it won't).

The stunt not only likely violates Parliament's rules against props, it also represents a further threat to the religious neutrality of the House of Commons.

Laws should be made based on reasoned, secular arguments, not appeals to dogma, faith or religion.

This is why we've argued for the removal of the daily prayer in the House of Commons, to make it clear that the space needs to be one for secular deliberation, not one for religious favouritism.

We will continue to follow Bill C-9 as it works its way through the Senate. Become a monthly donor so we can stand up for secularism in government.
