""Natural" gas in this way is the single largest source of carbon pollution in the city"

Vancouver citizens protested. The motion, in the end, was defeated.

Vancouver councillors vote to keep ban on natural gas heating for new homes in city | CBC News

Vancouver city council has voted against allowing new homes to be heated by natural gas. The proposed bylaw changes, which were supported by Mayor Ken Sim, would have reversed current climate-friendly practices and drew criticism from many.

Another *last minute amendment* to controversial #Vancouver 2026 Budget.

Mayor Sim, ABC Party majority, and allies have cut $8.2 million from Vancouver's existing retrofit program to make rental buildings less polluting and safer during climate disasters (cooling during #extremeheat)

"The climate crisis is making extreme heat more common, inflicting a deadly toll: the 2021 heat dome alone was responsible for 117 deaths in the city. Buildings are also responsible for about 60% of Vancouver's greenhouse gas emissions, largely because of gas heating." (600+ deaths in B.C. during #BCheatdome)

UBC professor:

"The word 'retrofit' is insufficient to explain the programs Vancouver's ABC part is cutting. It kind of makes it sound like this is a luxury, but cooling and living in a safe home is a human right."

Stand.Earth found, through FOI, trove of emails suggesting "provincial gas utility has had the retrofit program in its crosshairs since at least last year"

The ruling released Tuesday from Justice Ward Branch says there's "some basis in fact" to support the plaintiffs' allegations that the "horrific fire" was caused by railway operations, where CN and CP have parallel tracks that run through the town.

The wrongful death lawsuit accuses the companies of "hiding, downplaying and misrepresenting the risks of climate change caused by humans burning oil and gas and obstructing research".

International #climate researchers said in a peer-reviewed analysis that the 2021 heat dome in B.C was "virtually impossible without human-caused climate change."

#MarineHeatwave in British Columbia this week. Good info about it and its impact from @CBCnews:

🔻oceans absorbed around 90% excess energy and heat from GHG over 50 yrs
🔻warmer oceans have less oxygen + more pathogens = less food for marine mammals (e.g. whales)
🔻#extremeheat = mass die-off of sea creatures (#BCheatdome)
🔻contributes to #heatwaves becoming more frequent + intense
