This seems a bit alarmist, given that the ‘leaked memo’ is simply a letter written to the Health Minister, on behalf of a particular group; in itself it doesn’t signal an acceptance of their proposal by the government—I’m also wary of it because of the date of publication (Apr 1), although it doesn’t seem like the kind of thing that makes for a good prank.

However, we do need to remain vigilant of attempts by faith-based healthcare providers insinuating themselves into our public healthcare as this is already happening in Alberta.

Allowing faith-based healthcare providers into our public system opens the door to the denial of certain services or procedures on ‘moral’ grounds. This is unacceptable and contrary to the central premise of ‘universal’ healthcare.

Good news 🙌 Following our campaign in September (https://donoharmbc.ca/national-standard-on-n95s-into-bc-law/), WorkSafeBC has announced that once the most up-to-date standard for respirators in the workplace (CSA Z94.4) is released, they’re going to review it for future updates to BC’s workplace regulations.

This means we’re one step closer to getting up-to-date best practices about workplace N95 use and airborne transmission into BC law!

Thank you to everyone who wrote in to WorkSafe and attended the public hearing. Your voices made an impact! If you want a refresher on what a CSA standard is and why this one’s important, find our explainer at https://donoharmbc.ca/national-standard-for-n95s/ 😷

END RELIGIOUS EXCEPTIONS IN BC HEALTHCARE

Public Funds, Public Care

Every year, over a billion dollars of your tax dollars goes to healthcare facilities run by religious organizations. These hospitals are allowed to refuse legal, essential medical services including medical assistance in dying, abortion and contraceptives based on their management's religious dogma.

In 2026, terminally ill patients are still being forced out of their hospital beds just to access their legal right to a peaceful death. This is a violation of patient dignity and human rights.

Public funding should come with a public obligation. No British Columbian should be denied care or forced to undergo a dehumanizing transfer because the hospital bed they are in is governed by a church instead of the provincial health authority.

It is time to put patients before pews. Sign this petition to demand a truly secular, provincial healthcare system.
