Band-aid solutions are not going to fix the #flooding problems in the #Chemainus River #watershed - Chief James Thomas from the #Halalt #FirstNation told #NorthCowichan council last month. He said the watershed and its #salmon are in #jeopardy mainly due to #logging practices that were conducted upstream in the watershed over the past 50 years.

2025 marks my 33rd year with trying to get #BCForestryReform in #BritishColumbia #Canada.

The former BC Liberals were big on profiting from #deforestation. We had some hope when #BCNDP took over #BCgovernment but that was quickly dashed. The now dead John Horgan led BC into fresh new neoliberal, ecocidal hellholes. Our current BC Premier Eby was groomed by that former colonial capitalist jerkwad. Both neoliberals & fascist adjacent, white-is-right turdbuckets. More forests were clear-cut under #BCNDP power than under the former BC Liberal asshats.

Don't buy into government greenwashing & whitewashing lies when it comes to old growth forests. Denounce forestry industry funded lobbyists BS too. We need to #BanCorporateLobbyists & to #StopCorporateWelfare to fight more government corruption.

In June, USW Local 1-1937 went on strike in Tree Farm License 64 because the company insists on hiring non-union contractors to do union work. The new TFL is held by Western Forest Products and La-Kwa sa muqw, a partnership of four Vancouver Island First Nations: Tlowitsis, We Wai Kai, Wei Wai Kum, and K’omoks.

Forest industry losses will continue because the Canadian lumber industry is barely profitable. Almost all the old growth forests are gone. The easy-to-reach, low-elevation, high-value trees were taken years ago. What’s left is the “guts and feathers,” as Wilderness Committee campaign director Joe Foy says.

It costs politicians nothing to claim that this bailout will benefit workers. But the only thing they can guarantee is a new round of austerity: cutting wages and benefits and replacing union workers with non-union contractors – the same gambit that led to the Steelworkers’ strike.
