BBC Singers/LSO review – music, and words, of power as Rattle protests vandalism of UK’s musical life

Superbly executed Mahler was given fire by the addition of Poulenc’s work from the just saved BBC Singers – and a fierce attack on arts funding by the conductor

The Guardian

When a concert becomes a protest.

My piece for the Guardian on last night's Barbican concert, during which Simon Rattle spoke out against the appalling funding cuts to classical music in this country, and conducted Poulenc's Figure humaine with the BBC Singers, and Mahler Seven with the London Symphony Orchestra.

There's a link to his speech in the text

It is very good news that the #BBCSingers have been 'saved' - but now the fight must be on to prevent the cut-backs to the BBC's great orchestras.

Only today's BBC could appoint a so-called 'Head of Music' who knows the square root of F all about Classical music...

Too much good news. First #BBCSingers are given a reprieve after massive public and professional pressure.

And then this.
Be still, my beating heart.

Very happy to see this. Choral singing is so beautiful! #choir #BBCSingers

BBC suspends proposed closure of the BBC Singers

The group, which is the UK's only full-time professional chamber choir, will now perform at the Proms.

Better news this morning. However, this may be a ploy so that the Proms go ahead and so embarrassment is avoided.
The 20% cut to orchestras remains a threat, and I can't see even how this would save money; either they would have to restrict the repertoire or hire in musicians. This is never a fiscally sound tactic, certainly not worth ruining lives for. The only motive I can see us cruelty.
Solidarity with the Musicians ' Union. La lutta continua!
