This week we celebrated World Refugee Day, and for those of us who work in the UK migration sector, that means a joyous but exhausting 2+ weeks of celebrating the arrival, integration and contribution of refugees in the UK. Usually to enthusiastic audiences, but sometimes to indifferent, or skeptica

ยฃ290million to send people to Rwanda
Inhumane politics of the UK.
The UK has passed its highly criticised "Safety of Rwanda" bill. The new bill will allow the UK government to forcibly remove people who have fled violence and persecution to Rwanda. With no legal routes, the only option for those wishing to claim asylum in the #UK is to enter illegally by small boats.
Just hours after the British government approved this inhuman bill, five people died while crossing the channel demonstrating once again the need for safe and legal routes to the UK for people claiming international protection. Instead of upholding the 1951 UN refugee convention, the UK has committed ยฃ290 million to sending asylum seekers to a country the Supreme Court has ruled unsafe.
Horrifyingly, the British Home Office will start detaining people in preparation for the inhuman and criminal deportation to #Rwanda in their cruel 'stop the boats' campaign. For those at risk of deportation to Rwanda, you can find more information here: https://mcusercontent.com/d4f36f707d16adc8f374b3263/files/2d68ff92-509a-d272-6120-7b97d48a4ac3/JCWI_Rwanda_Act_Explainer_29_April_2024_.pdf
