A couple of weeks ago I traveled to west Texas to train two state veterinarians (Hunter Reed and Sara Wyckoff) on the surgical procedure for implanting trackers in waterfowl. We started with cadavers (ducks confiscated from poachers) and fake transmitters, then graduated to live surgeries. The training went well and they should be equipped to assist biologists with their important studies on mottled ducks, a species we know little about in terms of movements and population dynamics. They are so difficult to catch that it's hard to plan when and where they will be successfully captured. Hence, it made sense to train veterinarians there.
