@shellsharks missed opportunity by not using your #autofollow tag in your own post.

Here’s a random idea… there’s a contingent of folks on Mastodon (and on other social platforms) that will *pretty much* auto-follow-back anyone who follows them. Not sure how large this group is but they exist. Now consider the relative difficulty of a new, or low-follower account reaching a large audience or even being seen at all in the Fediverse. Without an algorithm, posts are easily lost in the local timeline deluge, never to be seen or engaged with. What if, for those who want to amass followers (for whatever reason) and would in turn follow anyone who followed them, put a keyword, something like “#autofollow” or something in their profile which could be crawled and then the entire network of people with this tag could instantly* follow all those accounts and be followed by all those accounts. Now they have some level of reach, as their posts would hit home timelines instead of local timelines and they have some level of discoverability as active posters and boosters are now populating their own home timeline. At any point, once you felt you had a decent footing you could remove the tag from the profile and thus exit said “network”. From there, you could prune your follows as you saw fit.

This idea isn’t fully fleshed out and I’m sure there are plenty of abuse vectors, and no tooling for automating the “network”, but I think there would be a fair amount of people who would benefit from bootstrapping a follow/follower footprint on Mastodon since feed curation and gaining followers can be time consuming.

BTW If any other instances want to be able to make accounts that are followed by default (eg. for moderation, downtime announcements, etc.) the patch is very simple: https://github.com/NeuromatchAcademy/mastodon/pull/5
