Autistic girls much less likely to be diagnosed, study says

By age 20 diagnosis rates for men and women almost equal, research finds, challenging assumptions of gender discrepancy

"You don't look autistic" is the neurodivergent equivalent of "but you seem so normal": delivered with a smile, landed with exhaustion. Autism doesn't have a look. It's a neurological difference, not a facial feature. Read why this comment hurts!

So my therapist proposed a theory today that hadn't previously occurred to me as to why my autism went under the radar while I was growing up. And I think she's right.
Not that I knew it at the time, but I was trans. I had a neurodivergent girl/neuter brain - so my autistic traits would have manifested as female autistic traits. Which no one, including me, would have even thought to look for.
Not to mention that in the period I grew up, "only boys" had autism and it was the kind where they were unable to talk, and they rocked in a corner.

#WritersCoffeeClub #Writing 31: Will you be writing today? How do you feel about your writing journey over the last year?

Oh man. I took most of the year off until I began an autobiography. My therapist said a book about my life would help others. That's pretty persuasive. I was also diagnosed ADHD/Autism, and as difficult as that's been to process, it's freed me and I want to write creatively again. I feel like I know how now 😂

I found this a very powerful yet gentle look at what it can feel like to be autistic. No two autistic people are alike, but the experience of isolation is common. A beautiful and sensitive documentary. Definitely recommend.

Being diagnosed with autism as a (female) child means I've had a vastly different experience than most of the late-diagnosed autistic advocates online.

A THREAD.
