The Atrocity Archives - Themself

A friend put me onto this book, saying that he was sure I’d like it. So I sneaked a copy of Charles Stross‘s The Atrocity Archives into one of my […]

Themself
Huh. I thought the “Twin Squirrel” Stross used for the helicopter was some nickname. Turns out the British just translated « Écureuil 2 ». 🤷🏼‍♂️ (It’s the twin-engin variant of the Écureuil → Squirrel.

I think the book came out just a few month too soon.
Stross goes on at length detailing the workings of a British Nuclear (H-Bomb) demolition charge, and doesn’t mention chickens even once.
The #ChickenNuke reveal was on 1 April (hah!) of 2004, and Atrocity Archives was published in 2004, too. Possibly in January.

So, to the parts i liked.
Bits like this. (With paleo-nazis around.)
Our Hero sees “some kind of small vehicle, like a weird cross between a tank and a motorbike”
Me: Oh, you mean a Kettenkrad
Another character in the novel: ‘“Cool, I always wanted a Kettenkrad,”’

So, I like Atrocity Archives by Chares Stross so far. But yikes, that ar some atrocities.

Oops.
I had red Charles Stross’ “Rule 34” a while ago. The second book in the series.
Now i started his “Atrocity Archives”, the first in his famous series.

Took me a while to realize they ar from *different* series. 😅
Never mind. Rule 34 was good, and so far Atrocity Archives is great, too.
Anyway, that means i hav even more books to read.

“‘This is an M11/9 machine pistol’”
The weapons instructor seems to like his M11. Let’s look it up.

“(T)his isn’t a good gun. It’s not a useful gun. (…)The Cobray M11/9 could best be described as one of the most useless handguns in existence.”

Øl, Ævl og Superkultur, fase to (del 2)
