As an extrovert working in a very different timezone from most of the team, this kind of connection is rare and deeply meaningful.

It took over 20 hours of travel to get here. 100% worth it.

Remote Work Dictionary: What Do We Mean When We Say “Remote Work”?

We are still in the first wave of remote work after the pioneering companies like Automattic, GitLab, Buffer, Zapier, Ghost, and more laid the groundwork and proven to the world that remote work is…

Intense Minimalism

While I don't think code reviews are all bad and waste of time, I do think some are bad or partial waste of time. There are effective alternatives to those weeks-long PR reviews, worth exploring imo.

Stop doing code reviews and try these alternatives

Code reviews aim to prevent bad code, but there are more efficient alternatives that improve overall code quality.

@KirstieJane whilst people may actually be remote, it's clear that not all work practices have adjusted themselves. We totally do not have #asyncWork working. I think #asyncWork rather than just #remoteFirst is the true goal. Then we each can work/engage when circumstances allow.
If you're doing #remotework but not #asyncwork then you're doing it wrong.

Just this week… From moving calls to later in the evening to be able to accomodate personal life priorities during the afternoon due to flexible team members and mutual respect for each other’s time… (timezones are your friends) …to being able to take calls, working and collaborating anywhere… these aren’t small things. Your work adapts to your life and not your life to your work—to a reasonable and responsible extent.

Values matter when you truly live and work by them.

Today is Family & Friends Day at GitLab. https://about.gitlab.com/company/family-and-friends-day/ Everyone gets the day off. 🤩

After the week(s) we just witnessed, I couldn’t be more thankful for being able to be productive at work while also maintaining a good balance between work and personal life.

Family and Friends Day

At GitLab, we are family and friends first, work second. A monthly Family and Friends Day during COVID-19 helps our Team Members prioritize their well-being.
