June 3, 1965 — Edward H. White II became the first American to perform a spacewalk during Gemini IV. The EVA lasted 23 minutes and took place as the spacecraft orbited Earth. White used a handheld propulsion gun to maneuver, then pulled himself along the tether once fuel ran out. He was connected by a 25-foot umbilical and wore a gold-plated visor for protection. Photos were taken by Commander James McDivitt.
