As Victor Glover makes history with Artemis II moon mission, a look back at other notable Black astronauts

CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA - APRIL 01: Pilot Victor Glover takes a photo with his family as he walks out of the Neil A. Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building ahead of the launch of the Artemis II at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on April 01, 2026 in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The 322-foot-tall Artemis II Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft will take the astronauts around the moon and back, 230,000 miles out into space and the farthest any human has ever traveled from Earth. #Orion was maneuvered into an orientation such that the urine tank and vent lines received the maximum amount of sunshine ☀️ to un-freeze the #urine. This helped a little bit, but did not entirely solve the problem. So for now, the #astronauts are continuing to pee into, essentially, bags

Houston, we've got a plumbing problem: Artemis II toilet is still on the fritz
Until the bathroom is fixed, mission control has instructed the astronauts to break out urine collection bags. The so-called lunar loo malfunctioned following Wednesday's liftoff and has been hit-and-miss ever since.

In other news the #Astronauts are posing for pictures out the #Orion #ArtemisII windows right now

Watching a great programme ‘Moonbound’ about the #ArtemisII mission, training and crew. https://plus.nasa.gov/video/moonbound-for-all-humanity/

Commander Reid Wiseman, Navy pilot, didn’t make the astronaut candidate program the first time he applied. He says he still has the rejection letter! Loved his advice to his kids: “Try to do good every day”

Also love Victor Glover’s tale of strapping part of a tent to himself, jumping off his grandparent’s roof to see if he could make a parachute 😂
