is the King Charles loonie thinner than the loonie I grew up with? - Lemmy.ca

I moved to Japan about 16 years ago and my family who is visiting me showed me the new King Charles loonie. When I put it in hand, it felt much thinner than what I remember. Is this because it IS actually thinner or am I just too used to Japanese coins?

Remember when getting paid didn’t come with bank fees? - Lemmy.ca

There was a time, not even 25 years ago, when getting paid didn’t require a bank account. You could be paid by cheque. You could walk into the issuing bank, show ID, and cash it. No account. No monthly fees. No minimum balance. Banks also used to accept Canadian currency without conditions. Today, try walking into a bank with a roll of quarters and no account and see how far you get. Getting paid now effectively requires a bank account. And once you have one, fees stack up quietly. Account fees, overdraft fees, NSF fees. Banks post record profits year after year, and this feels less like a service and more like a toll on earning income. It’s not illegal. But it feels like an extra cost that doesn’t need to exist.

How are adults supposed to shop for tobacco products when there’s no menu and everything is hidden behind drawers?

How are adults supposed to shop for tobacco products when there’s no menu and everything is hidden behind drawers? - Lemmy.ca

I get the intent behind hiding tobacco products, especially for kids. But as an adult, walking into a store with no menu, no prices, and no visible options feels unnecessarily awkward. You’re expected to already know exactly what you want. If you’re trying to switch to a lower nicotine or tar option, you don’t really have a way to compare or even know what’s available anymore. As an adult, should you actually have the right to see what legal products are available before buying them?

A recent news report says Canada’s defence planners are working on how the country could rapidly expand its forces in a national emergency. The planning includes non traditional roles and mentions older Canadians and people who might not meet full combat fitness standards. If the country asked for volunteers under this kind of plan, would you step forward? Why or why not?

When I was in NB I heard the term “hardon riggin”. Had no idea. When I said laneway they had no idea. They would say oh the driveway beside your front dooryard. Front dooryard?

Who knew Molly’s Reach from The Beachcombers is still standing? - Lemmy.ca

I saw a new MeidasCanada video with Charlie Angus sitting inside Molly’s Reach and it actually surprised me that the place is still around. I always assumed it had disappeared like most old Canadian TV landmarks. If you watched the video, what did you think of seeing that place still operating in 2025? How many still people remember the Beachcombers? https://youtu.be/WkF0_upKyYc [https://youtu.be/WkF0_upKyYc]
