Palestinians go on strike over Gaza onslaught

RAMALLAH: Shops, schools and government offices shut across the occupied West Bank and annexed east Jerusalem Monday as Palestinians staged a general strike protesting against Israel’s relentless onslaught in the Gaza Strip. The bloodiest ever war in Gaza has killed more than 18,200 Palestinians in the territory, mostly women and children, and 104 Israeli soldiers, according to the latest reported death tolls. Activists had called for a strike in solidarity with the besieged territory covering businesses, public workers and education.

Washington Post journalists plan 24-hour strike amid prolonged contract talks

LONDON: Unionized journalists at The Washington Post said they would stage a 24-hour strike on Thursday to protest staff cuts and what they call management’s failure to bargain in good faith in contract talks that have stretched on for 18 months. The planned one-day walkout would mark the first general work stoppage at the Post since the bitter, 20-week pressmen’s strike of 1975-76, when Katharine Graham was publisher, according to union officials.

Gaza health ministry says 27 killed in Israel strike near UN school

GAZA STRIP, Palestinian Territories: The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said Thursday at least 27 people were killed in an Israeli strike near a UN school in the Jabalia refugee camp. “The bodies of 27 martyrs were recovered and a large number of wounded,” said ministry spokesman Ashraf Al-Qudra in a toll AFP was unable to independently verify. AFP footage showed several casualties as crowds of people rushed to help them. “Children under 10 were simply buying from the canteen and were cut into pieces,” cried a woman in the school yard.

At least 4 killed in West Bank, Palestinians call general strike

Ramallah: At least four Palestinians were killed during Israeli raids in the occupied West Bank, Palestinian health officials said Wednesday, as violence there continued in tandem with the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. Three people were killed during a raid in the northern city of Jenin, while another was shot dead in Tulkarem, also in the north, the Ramallah-based health ministry said. The Israeli military said the incident took place in Jenin refugee camp during a raid targeting an “operative” and militant “infrastructure” in the area.

Nigeria offers measures to offset rising costs as unions mull strike

ABUJA: Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government on Sunday proposed a temporary wage hike for federal workers and more cheap gas-powered public transport among other measures to offset the impact of his economic reforms and convince labor unions to call off a planned national strike. Speaking in a broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 63rd independence day anniversary, Tinubu’s announcement came after he ended a longstanding fuel subsidy that cost the government billions of dollars a year to keep fuel cheap and also his liberalization of the naira currency.

The United Auto Workers strike against the Detroit Three automakers is set to enter its third day Sunday with no immediate resolution on the horizon. On Saturday, negotiators for the United Auto Workers and Ford Motor had “reasonably productive discussions” toward a new contract, the union said, while Chrysler-parent Stellantis said it had boosted its contract offer.
