Il Fatto Quotidiano: Presidio per la Flotilla a Roma, attivisti consegnano una lettera alla Commissione Ue: “Liberi subito Avila e Abukeshek”

Durante il presidio indetto in piazza Santissimi Apostoli a Roma, per protestare contro la visita del Segretario di Stato americano Marco Rubio, una delegazione di attivisti ha raggiunto la sede della Commissione Europea, poco distante in via IV Novembre, per chiedere, attraverso la consegna di una lettera, l’immediata scarcerazione di Thiago Avila e Sayf Abukeshek, al momento detenuti nel carcere israeliano di Ashkelon, in seguito al blocco di alcune navi della Flotilla.
“La detenzione e il sequestro dei due attivisti non è legittimata da nessuna norma internazionale – dichiara Tatiana Montella, del legal team italiano della Global Sumud Flotilla – Sayf ha cominciato anche lo sciopero della sete e per questo il tempo stringe, perché le sue condizioni peggiorano velocemente. Inoltre entrambi sono continuamente sottoposti a interrogatori devastanti”. Diverse le richieste raccolte ed esposte nella missiva. Oltre alla liberazione dei due attivisti, fermati dai militari israeliani in acque internazionali, i manifestanti chiedono la fine degli accordi di collaborazione tra Ue e Israele, la liberazione dei prigionieri politici palestinesi, la condanna contro la legge isreliana che ha introdotto la pena di morte e l’attivazione della protezione diplomatica consolare per quelle imbarcazioni della Global Sumud Flotilla, al momento ancora in mare e per ora dirette in Turchia. Il presidio è stata l’occasione anche per lanciare le prossime tappe della mobilitazione. Oltre alla manifestazione nazionale, che si terrà a Milano sabato 16 maggio, Guido Lutrario, dell’esecutivo nazionale Usb, ha annunciato lo sciopero generale a Roma per il prossimo 18 maggio.

Le Nazioni Unite hanno chiesto a Israele di rilasciare immediatamente due attivisti fermati durante l’abbordaggio in acque internazionali delle imbarcazioni della Freedom Sumud Flotilla sollecitando anche un’indagine su “preoccupanti testimonianze” di gravi maltrattamenti. Il cittadino spagnolo Saif Abukeshek e l’attivista brasiliano Thiago Avila erano tra le decine di persone a bordo di una flottiglia che tentava di portare aiuti a Gaza, quando è stata intercettata dalle forze israeliane in acque internazionali vicino a Creta giovedì scorso. I due si trovano detenuti in un carcere ad Ashkelon, nel sud di Israele.
“Israele deve rilasciare immediatamente e senza condizioni i membri della Global Sumud Flotilla, Saif Abu Keshek e Thiago Avila, arrestati in acque internazionali e trasferiti in Israele, dove sono ancora detenuti senza accuse”, ha dichiarato il portavoce dell’ufficio diritti umani dell’Onu, Thameen Al-Kheetan. “Non è un crimine mostrare solidarietà e tentare di portare aiuti umanitari alla popolazione palestinese di Gaza, che ne ha un disperato bisogno.” Le imbarcazioni della flottiglia erano salpate da Francia, Spagna e Italia con l’obiettivo di consegnare aiuti umanitari. I rappresentanti dei due attivisti accusano le autorità israeliane di averli maltrattati; entrambi sono in sciopero della fame da sei giorni.
Al-Kheetan ha denunciato le “preoccupanti testimonianze di gravi maltrattamenti”, chiedendo un’indagine e sottolineando che “i responsabili devono essere assicurati alla giustizia”. “Chiediamo la fine dell’uso da parte di Israele della detenzione arbitraria e di una legislazione antiterrorismo ampia e vaga, incompatibile con il diritto internazionale dei diritti umani”, ha aggiunto. “Israele deve inoltre porre fine al blocco di Gaza e consentire e facilitare l’ingresso di aiuti umanitari nella Striscia palestinese assediata, in quantità sufficienti.” Il tribunale di Ashkelon ha approvato una proroga di sei giorni della detenzione dei due attivisti della Global Sumud Flotilla, accogliendo la richiesta della polizia israeliana. Lo riporta il sito di Haaretz spiegando che i due restano in carcere almeno fino a domenica.

Il maggiore generale Avi Bluth, comandante del Comando Centrale israeliano in Cisgiordania, ha dichiarato il 4 maggio a Haaretz che i soldati non sparano ai coloni ebrei che lanciano pietre perché farlo «ha profonde conseguenze sociologiche». Ai palestinesi si applicano norme di ingaggio allentate per creare un «effetto deterrente». Ha aggiunto: «Stiamo uccidendo come non uccidevamo dalla fine del 1967».
Ha parlato con un giornalista, non in sede riservata. Ha usato il 1967 come metro del fuoco attuale in Cisgiordania. Ha chiamato «monumenti zoppicanti nei villaggi» i palestinesi menomati in modo permanente: segnale deliberato del prezzo da pagare. Nessuna affermazione è stata smentita dall’esercito israeliano.
Amnesty International documenta che sparare a chi lancia pietre non è risposta proporzionata: il diritto internazionale ammette la forza letale solo davanti a minaccia imminente di morte o ferimento grave. Il Consiglio per i diritti umani ONU ha registrato dal 28 febbraio 2026 almeno 22 palestinesi uccisi in Cisgiordania da forze israeliane o coloni. Bluth non contesta: rivendica.
Il 9 aprile la Commissione d’inchiesta ONU sui Territori Palestinesi Occupati ha avvertito che Israele «continua a perpetrare atti genocidari a Gaza» e che la crisi cisgiordana è oscurata dall’attenzione internazionale. Il comandante ha scelto questo momento per esporre sulla stampa una dottrina di fuoco che discrimina per nazionalità.
Flotilla Sumud: il tribunale di Ashkelon ha prorogato al 5 maggio la detenzione di Thiago Avila e Saif Abukeshek. Il team legale ha depositato ricorso urgente alla Corte europea dei diritti dell’uomo contro l’Italia come Stato di bandiera. La flottiglia si prepara a ripartire da Creta.

Major General Avi Bluth, commander of the Central Command of the Israel Defense Forces in the West Bank, stated on May 4th to Haaretz that soldiers do not shoot Jewish settlers who throw stones because doing so “has profound sociological consequences.” Relaxed engagement rules are applied to Palestinians to create a “deterrent effect.” He added: “We are killing as we had not killed since the end of 1967.”

He spoke with a journalist, not in an off-the-record setting. He used 1967 as a benchmark for the current situation in the West Bank. He called the permanently disabled Palestinians “crippled monuments in the villages”: a deliberate signal of the price to be paid. No statement was denied by the Israeli military.

Amnesty International documents that shooting at those who throw stones is not a proportionate response: international law admits lethal force only in the face of an imminent threat of death or serious injury. The UN Human Rights Council has recorded at least 22 Palestinians killed in the West Bank by Israeli forces or settlers since February 28, 2026. Bluth does not contest: he claims it.

On April 9th, the UN Commission of Inquiry on the Palestinian Territories Occupied warned that Israel “continues to perpetrate genocidal acts in Gaza” and that the West Bank crisis is overshadowed by international attention. The commander chose this moment to expose in the press a fire doctrine that discriminates by nationality.

The Brazilian and the Spaniard appeared in court in Ashkelon today. “The Israeli State has requested an extension of their detention by four days,” explained Miriam Azem to France Presse, international human rights coordinator for Adalah. The organization stated that its lawyers met with Ávila and Keshek in prison. The Israeli Foreign Ministry stated that the two activists were affiliated with an organization subject to US Treasury Department sanctions. The Popular Committee for Palestine Abroad (PCPA), the group, has been accused by Washington of “acting clandestinely on behalf of” Hamas. According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Saif Abu Keshek is a prominent member of the PCPA and Ávila is also linked to the organization and “suspected of illegal activities.” Spain condemned Keshek’s arrest and rejected the charges against him.

A due giorni dall’intercettazione, da parte dei militari israeliani, di alcune delle barche della Global Sumud Flotilla a largo di Creta, a Roma davanti alla Farnesina, “l’equipaggio di terra” si è mobilitato con un presidio per chiedere il rilascio immediato dei due attivisti, Thiago Avila e Saif Abukeshek, gli unici due sequestrati e portati in Israele. Le altre 173 persone, che si trovavano sulle barche fermate dalle forze israeliane, sono sbarcate a sud est dell’isola di Creta.
“Questa notte abbiamo fatto ricorso alla Cedu – spiega Tatiana Montella, del team legale italiano della Flotilla – perché la nave su cui viaggiavano i due attivisti batteva bandiera italiana, questo significa che c’è giurisdizione e responsabilità dell’Italia, perché è come se fosse successo sul nostro territorio”.
“Da quello che sappiamo sono stati trasferiti ad Ashkelon, dove c’è il carcere. Siamo preoccupati – racconta Maria Elena Delia, portavoce italiana della Global Sumud Flotilla – soprattutto per Saif, che essendo palestinese, rischia di essere condannato alla pena di morte”.
Con questo ricorso, si legge in una nota, il team legale della Global Sumud Flotilla denuncia una violazione grave e attuale della Convenzione europea dei diritti dell’uomo, in particolare degli articoli 2 e 3, che tutelano il diritto alla vita e vietano in modo assoluto ed inderogabile la tortura, i trattamenti inumani o degradanti e ogni forma di esposizione a tali trattamenti. Durante la conferenza stampa, i manifestanti si sono collegati con un attivista della Flotilla, in questo momento a Creta, che ha fatto sapere che, fra qualche giorno, le barche ripartiranno “con ancora più persone.”

With this appeal, a note reads, the legal team of the Global Sumud Flotilla denounces a serious and current violation of the European Convention on Human Rights, in particular articles 2 and 3, which protect the right to life and absolutely and irrevocably prohibit torture, inhumane or degrading treatment and any form of exposure to such treatment. During the press conference, the demonstrators connected with an activist of the Flotilla, currently in Crete, who informed that, in a few days, the boats will depart “with even more people.”
