I'm not sure that they really do. Getting down to cases...I am not the least bit sure that the #OpenAI boys or any of the #artificialIntelligence boosters have that much confidence in the intelligence of their devices. The various #AI things are put into competition mostly against each other, and on that basis do they all proclaim they're getting smarter every day, because of some benchmark numbers going up.

You know...like Elo scores inflating. In #chess. Which brings me to my last point: IBM cheating Garry Kasparov in that high-profile match that came to be used as a symbol of human futility. "The machines are already so much smarter than us!" they all say. They fudged up that one high-profile humiliation of Kasparov under dubious circumstances and after that...it's just sort of assumed that a computer is better at chess than a human being.

Is it? I've never been convinced myself.
