So interesting! Thank you.

I love my "Oxford Sherlock Holmes", a 9-volume hardcover set published by OUP in 1993-1997. It's an annotated edition, with genuinely useful brief critical comments in the appendix. It seems to have been a one-off; i bought it when it came out and I don't think it has been reprinted.

From slapping a pointless legal disclaimer on a public-domain character to fighting a CGI dinosaur, Sherlock Holmes has faced many improbable foes, but few as baffling as bad adaptations.

The Analytical Paradox: Legalism, Intertextuality, and Character Distortion in Contemporary Sherlockian Apocrypha

The persistence of Sherlock Holmes as a cultural icon is largely predicated on the character’s adaptability, yet this very fluidity often invites a disintegration of canonical integrity. As the lit…

"Footprints?"

"Footprints."

"A man’s or a woman's?"

Dr. Mortimer looked strangely at us, and his voice sank almost to a whisper as he answered.

"Mr. Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound!"
