The 2nd artist featured in Art from the Outside is the wonderful Madge Gill (1882-1961). An unconventional self-taught artist, Gill created 1000s of artworks in an East London terrace, often by lamp or candle light. Her work was created under the gaze of her spirit guide Myrninerest. Recently found work, finger-painted by Mary Barnes (1970). She wrote on the reverse: the Angel girl thyself put on thy sandals, and the chains are falling from her. Given with Love, to Morty, August 1971. Morton (Morty) Schatzman is an American psychiatrist who lived and worked with Mary at Kingsley Hall, the therapeutic community established by Ronnie D. Laing in Bow, East London in the 1960s. He later co-founded the Arbours Association with Joe Berke in 1970. The Arbours is still running, offering psychotherapeutic support to those experiencing emotional distress.
