By Portuguese artist ADD FUEL aka Diogo Machado @addfuel at 19 Belmont Street, Aberdeen, Scotland in June 2024 as part of @nuartaberdeen festival. Photos taken April 2025.
⠀⠀⠀
"Add Fuel is a Portuguese visual artist and illustrator who reinterprets the language of traditional tile design, in particular the Portuguese ceramic Azulejo (glazed tiles).

His technique of revealing and obscuring surfaces beneath or on top of existing structures and walls creates a unique optical illusion effect created through a combination of tessellations. From a distance these vector or stencil-based works appear to be recreating traditional motifs but are in fact brimming with pop and contemporary art references, rendered with a masterful attention to detail. Underpinning Add Fuel’s practice is his desire to challenge the viewer to contemplate the history and heritage that lies beneath the facades and pavements of our cities.

To contextualize his street pieces, Add Fuel researches traditional patterns from the region in which he is working. He has been showcasing his work in both solo and group exhibitions since 2006, as well as participating in some of the world’s leading urban art events." https://www.aberdeeninspired.com/murals/artist/add-fuel-2

'“I am the keeper of magic…but happy to share.”

Hera (Jasmin Siddiqui) returned to @nuartaberdeen after 7 years, and her impressive 12-floor-tall love letter to Aberdeen can be seen for miles around. The mural references Scotland’s national animal, the unicorn (how cool is that?!?) and sharing continues to be one of Hera’s core values.

During her discussion with NYC based culture critic Carlo McCormick on the opening night of the festival, Hera talked about street art as a Living Heritage (the theme of this year’s festival) and how that is relevant to her as an artist. Her iconic mural painted with Akut Herakut in ’17 on the façade of Aberdeen Market was demolished in ’22. Hera made the point that although she was really sad when she learned of the building’s demolishment; she is constantly travelling and painting new works, and therefore Living Heritage is very much constant cycle within the street art genre.
Hera also made the point that past murals live on in people’s memories...' @hannah_judah June 22, 2024

"In my work for Nuart Aberdeen, I portrayed a father with his daughter, the latter perched on his shoulders, reaching for something above, the nature of which remains unknown. This piece is a reflection on education, the transfer of knowledge, and the hope we hold for a brighter future for the next generation, despite the struggles they face.
I depicted a girl supported by her father because, in many countries, girls still face unequal rights compared to boys. My message is a progressive one for men and fathers because they must play their part in achieving equality." @mahnkloix June 14, 2024

"It wasn't until I started painting six or seven days a week that I saw my capabilities become a lot greater. .... Without painting as much as I did, I wouldn't be able to do what I'm trying to achieve right now. I guess my biggest advice would be to paint as much as you can. Don't get caught up on this social media thing. Just ignore that stuff. Just have fun with it, but work harder."
