Your art history post for today: Girl at a window overlooking St. Mark's Square, feeding pigeons, c. 1875, by Anton Romako (1832-1889), oil on wood, 28x22 cm, Belvedere Museum, Vienna. #arthustory #art
From the website: βThrough an open window, we, like the elegantly dressed young lady, look directly at St. Mark's Basilica with its large dome, elegant arches and filigree turrets. To the right of it, a section of the striking facade of the Doge's Palace can also be seen. In this small painting, Anton Romako combines Venice's magnificent central building and the pigeons that characterize the cityscape with the portrait of a girl. After his training in Vienna and Munich, the artist traveled through Europe for several years from 1854 onwards, spending a longer period of time in Venice. In 1857, he moved to Rome for the next twenty years. From there, he repeatedly visited the lagoon city to depict the picturesque life in pointed, small-format depictions.β
