They are certainly old enough that they could remember it, but they don't believe history has anything to teach them, so they never learned it in the first place.

Pure hubris. "I am a force of nature and will bend history to my will" meets "Hi, I also have a machine-gun" and loses, badly.

"The enemy always gets a vote" is a great way to express it.
