Mining Council orders a halt to Tía María #Bergbau #Peru
In a major reverse for Mexican-owned Southern Peru Copper, the Consejo de Minería (a tribunal within the Ministry of Energy and Mines) has ordered a pause in the development of the Tía María mine in #Arequipa for failing to comply with technical requirements. While far from being a ruling that will stop this controversial project, it means that extraction cannot begin until the requirements are fully met.

Tia María construction continues amid unaddressed community concerns #Bergbau
Construction at Southern #Peru ’s major new copper mining project at TíaMaría moves forward but without the community consent to provide it with much-needed legitimacy. The project in the #Arequipa region, which has been at the centre of dispute for the last 16 years, is due to come on stream in 2027. But local protest has recently lacked the vehemence that characterised earlier confrontations.
