In 1854, Joseph Leidy named Arctodus pristinus from remains found in the Ashley Phosphate Beds, South Carolina.

In 1878, the first fossils of a second species were found.
In 1879, they were named Arctotherium simum by Edward Drinker Cope.

Until 1967, they were grouped together under A. pristinus when Björn Kurtén revived and resplit Arctotherium simum.

Here's a portrait of the Arctodus, commissioned in 2022 for a project I cannot talk about yet. Arctodus, also known as the short-faced bear, lived during the Pleistocene.
