One novelty of this work is bridging observations and resilience-potential theory. Figure 3 shows how the potential landscape changes under increasing forcing. Special thanks to Prof. Lu Zhou for leading the observation-theory bridge. #Resilience #ArcticSeaIce

“‘We find that the proposed concepts would be environmentally dangerous. It is clear to us that the assessed approaches are not feasible, and that further research into these techniques would not be an effective use of limited time and resources,’ - the study concludes.”

The first ice-free day in the Arctic Ocean could occur before 2030 - Nature Communications

The first day with no sea ice in the Arctic will be a visible sign of climate change. This work reveals that this could occur before 2030 already and becomes more likely as the world warms. As the ice thins, the triggers are extreme weather events.

> As in most things related to climate change, it's the multidecadal trend that is key and that is unequivocally downwards, both in terms of extent and volume. Sudden spurts of growth are interesting, as are record meltdowns such as that in 2012. But that's it. Trend is the critical bit.

Has Arctic sea ice returned to normal?

Arctic sea ice has been steadily thinning, even in the last few years while the surface ice (eg - sea ice extent) increased slightly. Consequently, the total amount of Arctic sea ice in 2008 and 2009 are the lowest on record.
