#CD #archival tip: if your drive is so tired of a bad CD that it spits the CD out...
push the CD back in! Maybe in a different position. Literally. I moved the drive from the floor on the bed and the disc keeps #ripping now.

Or maybe it was `--scsi-timeout=1000`. Either way, CD is cracked but #redumper is happy:

What do y'all recommend using to archive DVDs? I have a Programming for Windows book with a DVD I wanna archive in it. #Preservation #Archival #InternetArchive
The Houston Public Library made a deliberate choice to archive this: two women, Mildred Hausinger and Marguerite Austin, standing outside a commercial complex next to a planter. Unremarkable on the surface. But the subject tag 'Lesbians' makes the intention clear — this is documentary preservation of ordinary life. Who gets to have their everyday moments treated as history worth keeping? #LGBTQ #TexasHistory #Houston #Archival
A single archival photo can hold a whole life. This portrait of Mildred Hausinger — a child in a light-colored dress — survives in the Houston Public Library collection as a quiet record that someone existed, was photographed, and was considered worth preserving. Portrait photography in the early 20th century wasn't casual. Someone made a decision. #TexasHistory #Archival #PortraitPhotography #HoustonHistory

Does anyone have the source code for David B. Cook's Handbook of Computational Quantum Chemistry?

Or, barring that, does anyone have the author's email?

But not having a backdoor is not the only issue that breaks this security. You also have to make sure that your system isn't going to snitch on you. You should avoid having any closed source software, and also avoid having any Chromium-based programs or browsers installed (such as Google Chrome, Google Chromium, Vivaldi, Opera, Brave, Microsoft Edge, React, etc) outside of a locked down virtual machine, as not all open source software is safe for this. There is a level of privacy and safety needed. If partially closed source software (such as Firefox, a few of its components out of its control are closed source) can't be avoided, choose the software with the least closed source components, and go for trust (Firefox is falling out here, I will need to replace with Waterfox, or another browser soon)

Well, today I spent the day as a volunteer in the Mills Archive (no relation), scanning photos of watermills in Devon and adding them to the catalogue.

My intent for doing this (one day a week) is to get some experience, and retrain as an archivist. I don't want to keep doing software development as a job, given the utter state the industry's in these days. It'll still be a hobby, as it has been for the last 45 years, but just that.
