#Nokalakevi was first identified as the remains of #Archaeopololis in the 1830s, when it was also thought to be the remains of #Aea, the mythical capital of Colchis. The first excavation in 1930/31 was an extraordinary collaboration between the Georgian SSR's People’s Commissariat for Education (#Narkompros) and the Emergency Association of German Science (Der #Notgemeinschaft der Deutschen Wissenschaft).
