StrypeyThe mess that our railways are in - including the Interislander - is a direct result of decades of underinvestment in maintaining and upgrading infrastructure. Both under corporate ownership as Transrail, and under the Key government after they were bought back into public ownership at the tail end of the Clark government.
The grounding of the Aratere was a direct result of this.
