Aquatennial was created to overshadow Bloody Friday, when Minneapolis police shot at 67 picketers and killed two strikers on July 20, 1934.

The Teamsters were striking against most of the trucking companies located in Minneapolis. It eventually lead to the Minneapolis general strike of 1934 that lasted from May to August.
