That began as tongue in cheek, but when I got out the Aptiva to troubleshoot the CF to IDE situation, I was given a 10 minute countdown. But behold, we have geometry, so pancakes may commence.

EDIT. Ils ont trouvé preneurs :)

Can't believe I'm saying this, but the #Commodore 386-SX16 seems rock solid in comparison to the super flaky #aptiva.

Slow as hell, partially incompatible graphics but with a spiffy new #SoundBlaster compatible ISA card. This is the perfect rig for early #Sierra and #LucasArts games. Maybe I should get a #MT32-Pi #McCake WaveTable board for it, or maybe that's a little overkill.

Fuck this. Maybe I was never meant to have a working #Aptiva or any #IBM for that matter. I just love the conservative design and build quality. It's built like a tank and equally difficult to disassemble and maintain.

There's a lot to be said about the later AT designs and even the ATX, but at least maintaining them and replacing parts is a whole lot easier. Sadly case build quality has gone down hill since then, and most of what you buy now is neither conservative nor sturdy. It's a fragile pile of glimmering RGB diarrhea.

I'm going to pack up my Aptiva parts and put that project on hold for a while. It's giving me nothing but heart ache.

I'm a little obsessed by my #IBM #Aptiva build, but it seems to be a monetary black hole - after having bought a lot of 3 presumably dead Aptivas for around €70, it turned out that I needed to get a new power supply that fit the box. That was about €150 on Ebay from the US, and after a couple of weeks that died. Now I managed to secure another one locally at a mind numbing €10, but while that seems to provide power for drives and the ISA slots, the processor is dead as a door nail. I'm assuming the 3v3 rail isn't working, but I'll have to investigate.

All these investments are driven by what I believe is the need to have a working professional, industry grade PC made by the company that started it all. It's silly, because my "bamboo" #Pentium 200 build (an often used Danish expression for PC clones in the 90s) does everything faster, better and a lot cheaper.

Maybe I should just sell this #cursed IBM #PC before it ruins me.

Managed to assemble my first #Gotek / CF-card combo. The 3D print could have been nicer, but I consider this a prototype. An excellent option for those with limited drive bays, who prefer easy CF card access. I plan to build a couple more, preferably in more suitable color to go in my #Commodore 386sx-16 and my #IBM #Aptiva desktop.

It's been a while since I updated you on my #vintagerepair project. Last time, I was knee deep in a Commodore PC50 III 386SX16, but things have gone a little out of hand since.

Shortly after I tasted the sweet, sweet flavor of success, I ordered a lot of 3 possibly dead #IBM #Aptiva system. Naturally they were exactly that - dead. One was missing a power supply and another had the wrong one. After a lot of work, I managed to get the beefiest system running - a #Pentium 133. The work is ongoing, and has so far involved ordering weird cable adapters from Germany, washing motherboards in the dishwasher and sourcing an original power supply from the US. Pro tip - if you're ever considering collecting desktop Aptivas, don't. They're incredibly difficult to get parts for, and - so far - pretty tricky to bring back from the dead.

And the BIOS is in Swedish.

Three Dead Aptivas - where do I start? \ VOGONS

Still, I look back fondly on that day my dad took me out of class to help him setup the brand new #IBM #Aptiva running #Windows 98 and trying to figure how to get a copy of Microsoft Office. Learning to install programs, my sibling coming home from college and infecting it with a W32 virus and that summer we had to factory restore it after boot sector #virus hosed the system.

Posting this one partially as a cautionary tale. This is a IBM Aptiva desktop on Goodwill, listed as "For Parts & Repair" at $14.99. However, what they probably don’t know is that it appears to be missing the separate part that sits on top of the desk and has the only power button for the system. Anyone getting this would have to find one of those or hack a power button. Ends in 3 days. Check it out: https://www.shopgoodwill.com/Item/208231092

Well, my Sunday wasn't all fussing with that #Aptiva. Spent some quality time with #Zwift admiring my friend's Honda that hangs out here to keep my Bandit company. #cycling #honda #cb750 #cb750k #trainer #garagetime
