I have an ex-editor of mine (when I wrote for Australian Macworld, great guy) who has asked me a Mac question, and while I don’t know the answer, you might! Here goes…

Hey, I have a curly Mac question that I can’t find an answer to. Hoping you can help.

I have thousands of photos in my Photos library. Way too many to keep locally, so I use iCloud. The way that’s supposed to work is that there are low-res thumbnails on the local disk and full-res originals are kept in the cloud and downloaded only when you need them.

All good.

I’m doing a project (posters for my child’s 21st) that involves uploading thousands of photos from my library to Canva. For many of them, I’m doing a bit of editing first for red-eye, etc. So I’ve downloaded hundreds (so far) of originals from iCloud.

At first this went pretty smoothly.

Now, however, my Mac is screaming that it’s running out of space, Photos is returning unknown errors and the project has ground to a halt.

My hypothesis is that even though I’ve finished the editing and uploaded to Canva — and therefore don’t need them anymore — the full-res originals are still sitting on my local drive.

Do you know how long Photos hangs on to those originals before syncing them back and leaving me with drive space? Do you know if there’s a way to make it happen sooner?

The obvious solution is to move the library to an external drive with tonnes of space. And I will do that. But it’s a band-aid.

Apple kończy wsparcie iCloud dla iOS 10 i macOS Sierra

Apple oficjalnie wyłączyło obsługę iCloud na urządzeniach działających pod kontrolą iOS 10 i macOS Sierra. Od teraz minimalnym wymaganiem są systemy iOS 11 lub macOS High Sierra.

Oznacza to, że kluczowe usługi takie jak iCloud Drive, Zdjęcia iCloud, Backupy iCloud, Pęk kluczy i Find My nie będą działały na starszych urządzeniach.

iOS 10 i macOS Sierra zadebiutowały we wrześniu 2016 roku. W praktyce zmiana dotyczy m.in. iPhone’a 5, iPhone’a 5c i iPada 4. generacji, które nie otrzymają już dostępu do iCloud.

W przypadku komputerów Mac sytuacja wygląda łagodniej – wszystkie modele zgodne z macOS Sierra obsługują również macOS High Sierra, więc użytkownicy mogą zaktualizować swoje urządzenia do ostatniego wspieranego systemu.

Francja potwierdza nową falę powiadomień Apple o atakach spyware

Francuska Agencja Bezpieczeństwa Informatycznego (ANSSI) potwierdziła, że Apple 3 września 2025 r. rozesłało kolejną serię powiadomień o atakach spyware do obywateli Francji. To już czwarta taka kampania w tym roku – poprzednie miały miejsce w marcu, kwietniu i czerwcu.

Apple ostrzega, że zaawansowane narzędzia szpiegowskie, takie jak Pegasus, Predator czy Triangulation, mogą atakować dziennikarzy, prawników, aktywistów, polityków i osoby na wysokich stanowiskach. Powiadomienie oznacza, że przynajmniej jedno urządzenie powiązane z kontem iCloud mogło zostać zainfekowane.

Użytkownicy, którzy otrzymali alert, powinni:
• skontaktować się z CERT-FR,
• zachować maila z powiadomieniem,
• nie resetować ani nie aktualizować urządzenia (by nie utrudnić śledztwa).

Na razie nie wiadomo, kto stoi za kampanią ani kogo dokładnie zaatakowano – także poza Francją.

Apple Updates iCloud for Windows 13 to Support ProRaw and ProRes

Apple has updated its iCloud for Windows app that adds support for Apple ProRes videos and Apple ProRaw photos.

Apple's iCloud app for Windows is designed to sync content such as photos, files, passwords, contacts, and calendars across devices and across platforms and consists of iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, iCloud Passwords, and iCloud Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and Bookmarks. It allows Windows users who use other Apple devices outside of computing to keep important information up to date and available on their Windows PCs.

Today's update makes a few small but much-needed changes to the platform that makes for a better overall experience. Windows users can now allow participants of an iCloud Drive shared file or folder to add or remove people and the app now supports the generation of strong passwords via the iCloud Passwords app:

Specifically for photography and videography, the app gets a crucial update that brings support for Apple ProRes videos and Apple ProRaw photos. Apple ProRes was only recently pushed as an update to all users, but ProRaw capture has been available for almost a year.

Currently, even on Apple devices, the process of moving photos and videos, especially larger files like RAWs or ProRes HQ, is particularly challenging given the slow transfer rates available via Lightning. While the latest iPads have moved to USB-C, the iPhone is still using this legacy cable that only allows for USB-2.0 transfer speeds.

One of the methods Apple suggests is to allow iCloud to back up files in the background and access them later on a computer via cloud sync. While this isn't an ideal workflow for someone used to capturing and editing in the same day, it is viable for users who are in less of a hurry. Previously this option wasn't available to Windows users, however, and since PCs also lack AirDrop, getting files off an iPhone and onto a PC, for example, was particularly limited. Apple has now gratefully removed this barrier and Windows users have one more way to access the high-quality photo and video files captured on iOS devices.

While AirDrop is still not an option for PC users, at least the ability to sync via iCloud is. The new update is available immediately via the Microsoft Windows store and requires at least Windows 10 with x86 architecture. Full system requirements can be seen on through the app's official listing.
