Cold #Appalachian winters have a way of slowing everything down. You are forced to sit back and let the day take you where it wants to. The #wind cuts sharp, the #ice grows intense, the #snow watch increases but the mountains go quiet, and the kitchen becomes the warmest place in the house.

This is when I am taken back to my #childhood and a favorite meal my #grandmother would make: chicken and dumplings. These days, I don't eat the chicken but the meal has simple ingredients that are mixed by hand and simmered slow. It fills the bungalow up with smells and memories of home. It’s the kind of meal meant to be eaten from a bowl held in both hands, steam rising, worries settling. No better vessel than my Momma Bear soup mug.

This is #Appalachia. This is simple good #food. No fancy extras. Just comfort, patience, and something hot on the stove while winter does what winter does.

Some traditions don’t need changing. 💙

Yard Renovations 🌧️

We’ve had ongoing #flooding in the yard, and after one too many heavy rains, we decided it was time to fix the problem the right way. When we first looked at the Bungalow to purchase, I sunk down a bit in the squishy back yard. Then the #Airstream sunk down a bit in the squishy back yard.

Then a deluge of rain within 24 hours happened.... so last week we installed French drains to help move water away from the house and keep the ground from staying saturated.

Right now, the yard is torn up with #trenches and piles of soil, and it’s not the prettiest stage and I keep reminding myself that this is part of the process. The goal is a #yard that drains properly, stays healthier, and holds up better through the seasons. But, dang, what was pretty green #grass is now full on dirt. And the #BabySharks are not happy it happened in their small play yard.

The Baby Sharks are still on porch patrol, watching every step, while we practice patience and trust the long-term plan. 💙

The porch whispers of what it’s becoming. I wish it would also paint itself. 🌙 Once open boards and weathered beams, now closing in just enough to feel like a room the mountains themselves dreamed up. My childhood dream of a sleeping porch is closer to reality. Soon it will be a true sleeping porch where the night air slips through the screens, the crickets keep rhythm, and the Blue Ridge sky shows off it's star light. 🌲✨

I can already imagine warm quilts, a lantern glowing soft in the corner, and the Yorkies curled up after a long day of porch patrol and chasing butterflies on the land. This little mountain bungalow keeps teaching me: some spaces aren’t built all at once, but slowly, in layers of memory and cedar-scented air. 🐾🏡

Just a couple of well-worn hats, a handmade shawl, and the scent of pine boards. Simple things that feel like home in Southern #Appalachia. 🌲

Each stitch in that crochet tells a story, each color borrowed from the mountains... #autumn golds, pine greens, and twilight purples.
In Appalachia, we hang our #memories on the wall right alongside our coats, so they’re always close when the air turns cool. 🏔️💛
