The #Tullymamder backfired so spectacularly that at the 1977 general election it handed a record majority to the opposition #FiannaFail party. To their credit, Fianna Fáil cleaned up the system by setting up an independent constituency commission. That ended blatant gerrymandering in Ireland.

There was better luck to come for minister Jim Tully. In October 1981, Jim was standing beside Egypt's to President #AnwarSadat, when #Sadat was assassinated. Jim escaped with a facial shrapnel wound.

#AnwarSadat undid #Nasser's protectionism in the #Infitah ("opening") to #neoliberalism. On #ThisDayInHistory in 1977, #Egyptians rose up in the #BreadRiots/#BreadIntifada, protesting higher prices & lower pay. By the end, 120 to 800 people had been killed & over 1200 arrested.
Over criticism of #AnwarSadat's decision to negotiate with #Israel (and over Infitah), on #ThisDayInHistory in 1977, Egypt broke diplomatic relations with #Iraq, #Syria, #Algeria, #Libya, & #SouthYemen. Egypt would later be expelled from the #ArabLeague for pursuing negotiations.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1977, Egyptian president #AnwarSadat addressed the Israeli #Knesset, the first and so far only Arab leader to do so. Negotiations with PM #MenachemBegin, a #FarRight leader, later succeeded at #CampDavid. Sadat's actions were widely, and justly, condemned.

Oddly, the minister responsible was Jim Tully, who narrowly avoided being assassinated with #AnwarSadat. https://www.irishpoliticsnewsletter.ie/p/tullymander

The worst #gerrymandering was eliminated in 1980 by the usually corrupt Taouseach Charles Haughey, who set up an independent Constituency Commission.

Bridging Chasms: The Camp David Accords and the Poetics of Peace

The Camp David Accords were more than political treaties; they were acts of faith amid decades of war. This post explores the accords’ history, human cost, and legacy while connecting them to Poetic Bipolar Mind’s mission: transforming wounds—personal or political—into spaces of dialogue, healing, and fragile but enduring peace.

Poetic Bipolar Mind
#TheCampDavid Accords were a pair of political agreements signed by Egyptian president #AnwarSadat and Israeli prime minister #MenachemBegin on 17 September 1978,[1] following twelve days of secr

Autographs

In 1971, my older brother and I attempted to collect the autographs of all the world leaders. We kept a detailed record of who we wrote to, who responded, and how long it took. The project lasted for several years. Here are some of our treasures!

1) Albert-Bernard Bongo, Gabon
2) Park Chung Hee, South Korea
3) Anwar Sadat, Egypt
4) Indira Ghandi, India

Jimmy Carter random fact: He thought Anwar Sadat was the greatest person he had ever worked with:

"'Sir, of all the people you worked with, who was the greatest?'

'Anwar Sadat,' he replied. 'The world will never fill his shoes.'"
