Advanced #geospatial tools are strengthening early warning systems & humanitarian logistics.
In #Madagascar, we are working with Croix Rouge Malagasy and German Red Cross to build local GIS capacity for #AnticipatoryAction:

▫️Delivered #GIS trainings for autonomous cyclone trigger use
▫️Co-developed a semi-automated cyclone exposure workflow
▫️Kicked off a project to create an AI-powered, weather-adaptive routing system for unpaved roads

We are looking forward to meaningful exchange on disaster preparedness in the context of climate change at this year´s 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗵𝘁𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝗮𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲 by the German Red Cross in Berlin next week.

Our colleagues Anne Schauss and Melanie Eckle-Elze will be there to talk about 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 and our experiences with assessing riverine flood risk in Pakistan.

This year, Anne Schauss and Melanie Eckle-Elze will take part in the German Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (Fachtagung Katastrophenvorsorge), which will be held on March 26–27, 2025. The theme of the conference is From Climate Change to Crisis: Integrating Disaster Preparedness and Climate Action. Together with other participants, we will explore the opportunities, challenges, and current developments in disaster risk reduction within the context of a changing climate.

Last week, we talked with the German Red Cross and the Somali Red Crescent Society about the challenges of developing of an Early Action Protocol for Drought in Somalia, in a webinar by #AnticipationHub.

If you missed it, you can watch it here to see how geoinformation and data science can strenghten preparedness for humanitarian crises like severe droughts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4AG7FeAJ94

How can AI enhance preparedness in humanitarian efforts?
How can we harness AI ethically?

We sought to answer these and other questions about #AI and #AnticipatoryAction in a workshop with @anticipationhub, @roteskreuz_de and many other humanitarian stakeholders.

Demystifying artificial intelligence for anticipatory action

What is the potential for using AI in anticipatory action? How can we harness AI in a way that is ethical and aligned with humanitarian values? A recent workshop sought to answer some of these questions and explore the AI tools that are already making a difference.

RT @FAODG: We cannot keep responding to food crises as if they are one-off, short-term events. We need more trust in #AnticipatoryAction & for this to translate into greater investments. We must all work together to turn the tide on acute food insecurity. #FightFoodCrises https://t.co/fx7isSaC6j

3/ We have come a long way in recent years for #EWS, #EWEA #FBEA #FBF and #anticipatoryaction.

We have evidence of what works well, what does not work well.

But we still have gaps in our knowledge and in our application and implementation.

5/ #anticipatoryaction overlaps with #EWS:

#EWS focuses on response activities before the disaster.

#anticipatoryaction also includes activities after the disaster, but the activities are linked to the forecast and early warning thresholds, so response is sooner.
