#Antibiotic treatments can alter the composition and diversity of the #bacterial community in the #gastrointestinal tract, known as the gut microbiome, with measurable disruptions persisting for four to eight years after a single course of treatment.

In new research, Yu-Ying Phoebe Hsieh , Ian O’Keefe, Ajai Dandekar, Harmit Malik &co reveal how magnesium sequestration by C. albicans enables P. aeruginosa to evolve much higher levels of resistance to colistin (a last-resort #antibiotic).

Magnesium depletion by Candida albicans unleashes two unusual modes of colistin resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa with different fitness costs

Bacterial resistance to the vital last-resort antibiotic colistin is an increasing challenge. This study shows that magnesium sequestration by C. albicans enables P. aeruginosa to evolve much higher levels of colistin resistance via changes in lipid A biosynthesis-modification pathways and a magnesium transporter.

@fabio Also due to these regulations I cannot buy antibiotic ointment when the Czech regime is depriving me of healthcare when I have an infected eczema and am afraid it will produce sepsis and I die, because antibiotic ointment ran out and when I call a dermatologist and tell I need it urgently she gives me an appointment 4 months (!!!) in the future!

In a corrupt developing 3rd world dictatorship Cambodia it is possible to buy antibiotic ointments without prescription and also dermatologist wait there is only 7-10 days, not 4 months.

I feel

Do #American #farmers not care that their absurd overuse of #antibiotics is creating #antibiotic #resistance, & on a massive scale? Unfortunately for #consumers of US meat & poultry, that resistance isn't confined to veterinary #diseases.

Shift raises concerns of increase in antibiotic-resistant ‘superbugs’, which sicken millions of people annually

Good news! It’s day 8 of treating my toe, and I’m almost done with my antibiotics! I really cannot wait to wear my Nikes again after all this time.

The only thing I’m not looking forward to is the amount of eating I have to do to replenish my microbiome.

My antibiotic is SMZ-TMP DS 800-160 mg.

The increased prevalence of #antibiotic resistance could make common #infections deadly again, which presents a threat to worldwide public health. Researchers have developed the first directed evolution-based method capable of evolving synthetic condensates and soluble disordered proteins that could eventually reverse antibiotic resistance.

New antibiotic for Clostridioides difficile infections: The groups of Nathaniel Martin of our @LED3hub and of Wiep Klaas Smits of the LUMC published the powerful semisynthetic guanidino lipoglycopeptide EVG7 to treat Clostridioides difficile infections. While I saved #antibiotic discovery for last, there is surely still a high need for new antibiotics, may they be natural products, semisynthetic derivatives or fully synthetic compounds. (11/12)
