Dreading the January onslaught of messages demanding that you “fix” your body so it conforms to an unrealistic ideal based on racism?

Interested in hearing from under-represented voices in public health that share different messages?

Announcing the Shared Stories Society!

Starting January 16 join me online Friday afternoons from 3-4:30pm Pacific Time for “media club”. This program invites participants to explore under represented voices in public health. We will examine books, zines, and more across the year. Each session will include time for grounding and self-reflection in addition to group discussion of the materials.

January through February we’ll be reading Aubrey Gordon’s book, “What We Don’t Talk About When We Talk About Fat”, and learn how anti-fat bias harms not only fat people, but thin people as well.

While this is listed as being for adults 60+, if you’re an adult younger than 60 and want to participate, please sign up anyway! We’ve officially expanded it to 40+, but if this is what you need and over 20, consider joining, just know the conversation may be biased to post-menopausal people.

Fuck man, I tried to search for 'postive self-talk' around poor self image due to weight/body type+changing worries and ALL that came up, LITERALLY EVERYTHING was diet culture grift weight loss bullshit.

This is why people follow influencers who try to take a different tack
I want to Feel LESS SHIT in a shitty moment and all that you get is GET SMALLER, FATTY

Fucking hell.

SOMEHOW the hospital had standing orders to check my blood sugar before I ate, despite the fact that I told MULTIPLE people/forms that I am not diabetic, so that's fun

I wore my contacts, put on mascara, wore a relatively flattering shirt. When I was thinner he was much more sympathetic and kind, so I am “prettying myself up” to see if that previous “I give a shit” vibe is still an option.

I'm so angry. My loss of appetite is back in a really troubling way. But the last time this happened (last summer) I told my primary care doctor, I told my rheumatologist, I told the ER and urgent care providers. ALL of them were not concerned. And, do you know why? Because I am fat. I guarantee if I was thin and said "I have no appetite, I have to force myself to eat" they would recognize it as a problem. So now I'm angry because I don't want to talk to doctors about my health. #AntiFatBias

I used to think it was important to fight "obesity" -- which made me part of the problem. In this blog post I try to explain what changed my mind and to reflect on how we can begin to fight for fat liberation.
