Mount Ritter is everywhere. Last trip with my niece (and my brother in law) before she goes off to college. She wanted one last backpacking trip with us! 30 miles over 3 days from Tuolomne Meadows to Rush Creek, saw one bear, chose said bear, and watched a sunset while floating in Thousand Island Lake like a penguin. Good times! #backpacking #anseladamswilderness #yosemite #johnmuirtrail

“Two Trees, Sierra Rain” — Two trees standing on a rocky outcropping as a Sierra Nevada summer rain storm sweeps across the mountains.

In some ways I was surprised to find these two trees standing here, among high rocks not far from our campsite. After a day of heavy weather, I thought about how they had managed to escape significant damage from years of exposure to winds, precipitation, and lightning strikes. But there they were, standing tall on this little ridge above a small meadow as another storm cleared…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2024/10/21/two-trees-sierra-rain/

Above that we see large expanses of glaciated granite with rounded and smoothed forms that are now cracked and broken by erosion. Still higher, a permanent ice field (one of a diminishing number of them) nestles in a bowl eroded by its glacial ancestor. The ice field sits at the base of very steep and rugged slopes that rise to unseen peaks...continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2024/10/08/rock-and-ice/

Wish I was back here #silentsunday #anseladamswilderness. From 2022, the last time I got to take an extended solo hike along the Sierra High Route. Lower Twin Island Lake, shot from Upper Twin Island Lake. I think I was the only one for miles around.
