Anyone remember Annie Haslam and Renaissance? They were a part of my teen years listening to Album Oriented Radio (AOR) ... I would get excited when one of their songs would come on - which was rare because they tended to be 8 minute long art-rock numbers. I listen to her now and think how she paved the way for Kate Bush, Stevie Nicks, even Heart - but her music is largely forgotten. This BBC recording is from 1977; one wouldn't guess looking at this YouTube that punk was the full blast sensation of British popular music culture at this time.

The progressive rock of Renaissance, like that of Emerson Lake and Palmer, often incorporated classical material.. The piano introduction is based on the French organ composer Jehan Alain's "Litanies". Unusually for a British popular music vocalist, Annie Haslam sings without a trace of an American accent.

One of the great things about the internet in general and YouTube in particular is the resurfacing of works and genres that were beginning to sink into obscurity.
