Singer, keyboard player, composer Anna von Hausswolff is an artist with an impressive catalog that brings together a few strands from the artsier regions of rock, post-rock, and contemporary music, whatever that stylistic collection ought to be called. The overarching quality of her sound is gothic in its dark, foreboding sense. She plays the piano and sings with all her remarkable range in ways that recall a Kate Bush or Joanna Newsom. When she switches to what seems to be her favorite, the pipe organ, she is able to not only conjure up gloomy textures to establish mood like Jarboe and others, but also classical music inspired shapes or modernist discomfort that go beyond that. She is also an artist who knows how to balance that highbrow sound with down-to-earth, catchy tunes that the listener can easily latch on to, as was the case in her 2025 album Iconoclasts.
