The Woman in Red: A Tale of Love and Revolution

Some books possess the remarkable ability to capture our attention unexpectedly, enticing us to embark on an unforgettable literary journey. For me, one such book was Diana Giovinazzo’s “The Woman in Red.” Somehow, this novel appeared out of the ether into my reader, demanding that I explore the extraordinary life of Anita Garibaldi, a 19th century Brazilian revolutionary whose daring spirit and unwavering determination resonate through the pages.

Destiny toys with us with both hands. For my sins, I will pay as all of us must. More I think. But I still rejoice in the family she has brought me.”

Anita Garibaldi

I had heard the name of Giuseppe Garibaldi , a key figure in the unification of Italy, but my knowledge of the particulars was sparse indeed. “The Women in Red” was the catalyst for my exploration of this transformational time in history. Diana Giovinazzo offers a compelling portrayal of the passionate and tumultuous relationship between Giuseppe and Anita Garibaldi, as well as their intertwined roles in the revolutionary movements of the 19th century.

Anita Garibaldi’s Early Life

Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro was born on August 30, 1821, in Laguna, a part of the Kingdom of Brazil, a constituent kingdom of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves — a year prior to the country’s independence — into a poor family of Azorean Portuguese descent. She was the third of ten children born to Maria Antonia de Jesus Antunes and Bento Ribeiro da Silva, a tropeiro (a designation given to troop and commissions drovers of horse, cattle and mule moving between commercial regions and consumer centers in Brazil). In 1835, at the young age of fourteen years, Anita was forced to marry Manuel Duarte Aguiar, who abandoned her in order to join the Imperial Army.

Anita Garibaldi’s Revolutionary Journey

Giuseppe Garibaldi, a Niçois sailor of Ligurian descent turned Italian nationalist revolutionary, sought refuge in southern Brazil in 1836 and began fighting for the separatist Riograndense Republic during the Ragamuffin War. It was during this tumultuous time that young Garibaldi first laid eyes on Anita. In a moment charged with passion and determination, he whispered to her, “You must be mine.” Anita fervently embraced this call to adventure, joining Garibaldi on his ship, the Rio Pardo, in October 1839. Just a month later, she fearlessly entered the fray, participating in battles at Imbituba and Laguna, standing by her lover’s side as they fought for their shared ideals.

Anita actively participated in the fight for Southern Brazil’s liberation from Portugal. This struggle spanned almost ten years and led her to crisscross oceans and continents. Her enduring impact on South America and Italy solidified her status as a feminist icon and a revered historical figure.

Anita Garibaldi’s legacy is characterized by her unwavering determination, remarkable bravery, and the indomitable spirit with which she pursued the life of her dreams, both in love and in the fight for freedom.
