Or alternatively Animaga which is primarily in Melbourne but is now also sometimes held in Sydney is my understanding. 🇦🇺 🌏 🦘 #animeconventions

Ai-Kon looks more on par with other larger Canadian #animeconventions I've attended in the recent past like AnimeThon (Edmonton) and Otafest (Calgary) and AniRevo (Vancouver).

Even though I can't make it this year, I do hope that AniRevo Toronto 🇨🇦 is successful and will come back next year, too.

I might revive some of my Star Trek TNG cosplay for Oni-Con this year for  's and  's.... #animeconventions #cosplay
Holy Shit, my Anime & Manga Library Resources panel was approved for Oni-Con!! CRAP! Going to Galveston this year after all I guess...I applied for a panel on a lark....a day AFTER the closing date but the form was still up so I figured eh why not.....I was totally not planning to go this year but now I am...already booked my hotel on Expedia....same one I always use because it's cheaper than the official con hotels. #animeconventions #OniCon2025 #Galveston

5 Reasons Why You Should Watch Made in Abyss

Few anime blend beauty and horror as effectively as Made in Abyss. This visually stunning yet emotionally intense series takes viewers on a journey deep into a mysterious chasm filled with wonders, dangers, and heartbreaking truths. This anime is an experience like no other. But is it for you? In this post, there are five compelling reasons why this anime deserves a spot on your watchlist—and one reason it might not be the right fit for everyone.

What is Made in Abyss about?

Made in Abyss is a dark fantasy adventure anime that follows Riko, a young girl who dreams of exploring the Abyss, a vast, multi-layered chasm filled with ancient relics, strange creatures, and deadly secrets. As the daughter of a legendary Delver—one of the brave explorers who risk their lives uncovering its mysteries—Riko longs to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Her journey begins when she discovers Reg, a robotic boy with no memory of his past but possessing incredible abilities. Determined to uncover Reg’s origins and find her mother, rumoured to be waiting at the bottom, the two descend into the Abyss, only to face unimaginable dangers as the environment grows increasingly hostile. Blending stunning visuals with haunting themes, Made in Abyss explores curiosity, survival, sacrifice, and the cost of knowledge, making it a must-watch for fans of deep, thought-provoking anime with real emotional stakes.

5 Reasons to watch Made in Abyss

1. Breathtaking World-Building

Made in Abyss features one of the most imaginative and meticulously crafted fantasy worlds in anime. The Abyss itself is a vast, mysterious chasm filled with unique ecosystems, ancient relics, and hidden dangers. Each layer introduces new creatures, survival challenges, and lore that keeps the audience deeply engaged. Many anime attempt deep world-building, but it stands out due to its organic storytelling. Information about the Abyss isn’t dumped on the viewer but revealed gradually through the protagonist’s journey, making discoveries feel natural and immersive.

2. Emotional Storytelling and Character Growth

The series delivers a powerful emotional journey, tackling themes of curiosity, loss, sacrifice, and the cost of ambition. The bond between Riko and Reg feels genuine, and their experiences shape their personalities in meaningful ways. Some anime rely on action or spectacle, but this series invests in emotional stakes, making the characters’ struggles deeply impactful. The heartbreak and triumphs are felt viscerally, drawing viewers into their personal journeys.

3. Unique and Beautiful Art Style

The contrast between the chibi-like character designs and the detailed, sometimes grotesque environments creates a striking aesthetic. Backgrounds are painted with stunning depth, making the Abyss feel alive and mysterious. Some may argue that the cute designs don’t match the dark tone, but this juxtaposition enhances the horror aspects. The innocence of the art style makes the brutal realities of the Abyss even more shocking, intensifying the emotional weight.

4. Haunting and Memorable Soundtrack

Kevin Penkin’s score is one of the best in modern anime, perfectly capturing the wonder, mystery, and horror of the Abyss. Tracks like “Underground River” and “Tomorrow” evoke both awe and dread, adding emotional layers to every scene. A good soundtrack enhances immersion, and Made in Abyss achieves this masterfully. The music isn’t just background noise; it’s an integral part of the storytelling, making key moments unforgettable.

5. Unflinching Dark Themes and Real Stakes

Unlike many adventure anime that protect main characters from real harm, Made in Abyss does not shy away from brutal consequences. The dangers of the Abyss feel real, and characters suffer physically and emotionally, making their survival all the more compelling. Some might find the darker elements disturbing, but this level of realism adds gravity to the story. Without real danger, the sense of adventure would feel hollow. The show respects its audience’s intelligence by not sugarcoating its themes.

One Reason Not to Watch Made in Abyss:

Intense and Potentially Disturbing Content

Made in Abyss explores extremely dark themes, including body horror, psychological trauma, and child endangerment. Some scenes are deeply unsettling, even for experienced anime fans. While the series is beautifully crafted, not everyone enjoys narratives that push emotional and psychological boundaries. If you prefer lighter, more optimistic storytelling, Made in Abyss may be too heavy. However, for those who can handle it, the emotional payoff is profound.

I loved MomoCon (Atlanta, GA) but it just about wiped me out in terms of stamina. Each day was exhausting. Yes, MARTA is handy to get from your hotel to the GWCC and back BUT it can be an ordeal in and of itself. I'd rather have it than not have it but the setup for Kumoricon is a much more user-friendly experience. #animeconventions
There's a certain sameness across all #animeconventions that is comforting but also predictable. Each con experience is unique, even from year to year, yes, but there are certain baselines that are consistent, too. There will always be lines, always lots of walking, always lots of cool cosplay, cool merch. The best cons will have you agonizing over great panels scheduled opposite each other because it's just that jam packed with good content....
Like, I'm not serious enough a collector that it's worth it for me to get into the gargantuan lines that inevitably form to allow people into the Dealers Room & Artist Alley. There's always a specified start time and it's always a barely controlled mob of people. Best to steer away from those diehards until the mania lapses and the spaces reach equilibrium. #animeconventions
