Would you like to make a meaningful impact on the lives of farmed #pigs? If so, we need you!

Public submissions are open for the #Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry into #pig welfare, which was initiated after #FarmTransparencyProject exposed the use of gas chambers in #Australian slaughterhouses. Chaired by #AnimalJusticeParty MP, #GeorgiePurcell, the inquiry will investigate the welfare of farmed pigs in #Victoria, and prepare a report suggesting improvements to the government.

Vegan Australia is preparing a submission that calls for an end to the breeding, using and killing of animals in #Australia. In order to ensure that the #vegan voice is fully represented, we want to encourage as many individuals as possible to write their own submission.

The deadline for submission is the 12th of January. For guidance in writing your submission, click through to this link:

Let's work together to build a kinder world for pigs, and all animals.

“We like to call ourselves the progressive state in Victoria, but we are left behind Queensland, Western Australia and New South Wales in terms of getting the start here.”
- #GeorgiePurcell for giving this issue the mighty push it needs!

End the Duck Slaughter

End the Duck Slaughter - Our native waterbirds need sanctuary, not slaughter. Yet duck shooters are still allowed to maim our native species simply for fun. Shooting ducks is morally unacceptable to the majority of Victorians and studies show time and time again that native duck numbers are consistently declining as a direct result of the climate emergency and drought. Duck shooting has already been banned by Labor Governments in New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia. It's time for Victoria to do the same. Right now, the lives of native waterbirds are hanging in the balance as the Andrews Government decides on the future of duck shooting.

Animal Justice Party Victoria

@nm I have sent an email to #AnimalsAustralia and the #AnimalJusticeParty (Australia) asking them if they would be interested in having a presence on Mastodon, but you are welcome to email them as well as you would be asking them officially. ☺️

I would also like to recommend: #VeganSociety (UK), #VeganAustralia, #PHAIRsociety, #PlantBasedNews, #SharkLab, #abillion, #voiceless (Australian), #AnimalLiberationVictoria, and possibly the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (#PCRM) - founded by Dr Neil Bernard.

If I think of any more I will let you know!

I invite all people, #vegan, #vegetarian, #omnivore, that love animals and are against needless cruelty, to sign this petition which calls for an end to the live sheep export trade. It is truly ridiculous that a pet #dog or #cat is not allowed on the majority of cruise liners (perhaps there is a single exception or two out there and not counting for service dogs), to accompany you on a cruise, yet #sheep, #horses, #goats, #cattle #buffalo and #camels are perfectly able to travel thousands of kilometres in conditions one step above a shit hole, only to be slaughtered/killed in ways seriously suspect of Australias laws against animal abuse.

There is talk of ending the trade, specifically the live sheep export trade, but this petition by the #AnimalJusticeParty will go a long way in making that reality come so much sooner.

And of course money comes into the picture. Ending all 'livestock' export will result in a loss of $1.6 billion dollars to the Australian economy, the money which predominantly goes in rural communities. In addition to the ban of this export, alternatives need to be incorporated so that the community doesn't suffer.

I do not normally ask this, but if you could boost this toot so that more people can sign this petition on behalf of all the sheep out there, that would be much appreciated. 🐑🐏

SHEEP IN THE LIVE EXPORT TRADE NEED YOUR VOICE

Live export is back on the political agenda and we need your help to keep it there. In May 2022, the Albanese Labor government was elected with a promise to end the live sheep trade, in which millions of animals suffer severely during torrid journeys - only to face terrifying, fully conscious slaughter at their destinations. While the end of the live sheep trade is welcome news, the Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister have said that they do not envisage it ending before 2025 (i.e., not in the government’s current three-year term) - a statement that condemns millions more sheep to avoidable suffering on board filthy, hot, live export ships. The Albanese government has so far made no commitment to an end date. To make matters worse, most live export ships leave Australia without an independent observer on board to monitor compliance with animal welfare standards. Is this OK with you? While the federal government’s new advisory panel deliberates on a timeline to phase out live export, the industry and its lobbyists are pressuring the government into watering down its election promise to end it. Public Pressure Works! The hard-won northern summer ban on shipping sheep to the Middle East during the hottest three months of the year (June to mid-September) was at risk of being weakened, but after strong representations from animal advocates the Department of Agriculture has announced that the ban on shipping sheep during this period will be retained. This is a win for the animals, and for all of us who voiced our concerns and objections during the Department’s review of live sheep exports by sea in early 2022. We need to continue to speak up and make sure that our voices are heard too, on behalf of the millions of helpless animals caught up in the cruel live export trade.

Animal Justice Party Australia

I get really into elections, voting, and democracy here in Australia. It sounds silly, but I get more excited watching the vote counts on election day than I ever did watching a sports game (Editors comments: talk about alienating people, go on and tell us you are #vegan too!).

As it may not be too surprising, I am quite left leaning and have always placed my vote towards the leftish side of politics, think, #TheGreens / #ALP.

However, I am no longer feeling connected towards the Greens or Labor. So for this Saturday, I placed my vote for the Victorian State election with the #AnimalJusticeParty.

It is impressive seeing the #AJP party grow, having nearly 100 candidates running this year. I have high hopes for their chances in picking up a few wins. I am not expecting a miracle, but I know that they will get more votes than they did in 2018, and foolishly optimistic that this will translate to a seat or two.

As time goes on, people will become more aware of:
-The cruelty of factory farming and the exploitation of animals
-The impact of #ClimateChange and the #ClimateEmergency
-Small parties and independents capable of pushing bigger parties into action

And for that, I believe change is coming. Hopefully not before it is too late.

"A better world for animals, people, planet."

@monika Yeah I was very disappointed in this article. Greens are great and all but ignoring the #AnimalJusticeParty is a bit odd. I am not sure what their chances are, but considering they have a candidate running in every lower house, the number of votes they get should increase on that alone.
