I am heartbroken. Today at the shelter where I volunteer, I learned about a cat that had been surrendered by a Mexican family. Surrenders are so hard, yet this one really hit. The family had had the cat for nine years, since he was a kitten.
Due to the political climate in the US, they had no option but to self-deport back to Mexico. I am glad that they did not abandon the cat and decided to give him a chance by bringing him to the shelter.
My main activity at the shelter is to interact and socialize with the cats, which has been incredibly rewarding. However, this cat is really depressed, and I can see in his eyes a deep sadness that I rarely see in a cat, even other depressed cats I have worked with.
I hate this. a lot of people don't realize how the impact of this inhuman persecution branches through and reaches the most innocent creatures that do not have any say on this.
I don't blame the family at all, I cannot imagine the situation they have gone through to reach the decision to surrender a rightful member of their family. yet there is certainly the group of people in power that are to be blamed 100%
I feel so powerless, I will do what I can to try to give this cat a fighting chance, hoping that he gets a new home of his own, yet there's not much I can do...
fucking hate this...
