In 1970 Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni made the counterculture film Zabriskie Point starring Mark Frechette and Daria Halprin. The film was a huge box office flop and was panned by critics, yet it fascinates today for it’s cinematography, soundtrack and the use of inexperienced actors.
Mark Frechette was discovered by Antonioni's casting director, while in the middle of a shouting match with a person on the third floor of an apartment building at a Charles Street bus-stop in Boston. "He's twenty and he hates", she told Antonioni. The director immediately cast Frechette.
Daria Halprin had previously appeared in one documentary film before Antonioni cast her for the lead in his film.
Despite the film being a flop, the pair, who became an actual couple, were symbols of the clash between the establishment and the disillusioned youth of America, appearing on the covers of Look and Rolling Stone magazines and appearing on TV talk shows. Eventually the couple split after Frechette joined the Lyman's Fort Hill Commune in Boston and Halprin refused to join.
In 1973, Frechette and 2 members of the Fort Hill community attempted to rob the New England Merchant's Bank in Roxbury, a Boston neighborhood. One of the trio was killed by police while the other 2 were arrested and pleaded guilty. Frechette was sentenced to six to fifteen years in prison where he died in 1975, during a weightlifting accident when a 150-pound barbell fell on his neck and he suffocated. He was 27.
Halprin made one more film before developing an interest in creative arts therapy. In 1972 she married actor Dennis Hopper and they divorced in 1978.
