Euripides ‘The Bacchae’ tells the unfortunate tale of Pentheus, the king of Thebes, who banned the worship of Dionysius. This provoked the wrath of the god and led to the women of Thebes breaking out into a Bachhic frenzy. Pentheus was ripped limb from limb. His death was viewed as a sparagmos, where tearing an animal (or human) apart was viewed as a special type of sacrifice.
