Gladwyn d’Souzathe estimate for January through June showed 2,061 deaths on California roads. If the numbers for the second half of 2023 were roughly equivalent, that would be well over 4,000 Californians dead—and close to 40,000 nationwide. For what it’s worth, that’s roughly 17 times more Americans than died in the entire 20-year war in Afghanistan.
